S01E03 - Flu Pandemic 101
…It is only a matter of a few hours then until death comes. It is horrible. One can stand it to see one, two or twenty men die, but to see these poor devils dropping like flies, We have been averaging about 100 deaths per day… It takes special trains to carry away the dead…
[A letter from a U.S. Army army camp physician in Influenza Pandemic]
"Gosh darn it son, it's ONLY flu. Get your lazy bum from the bed and go to school" We probably hear those kind of words everyday when we got the flu. It's ONLY flu, it's ONLY flu. Well, if it its A flu then probably the saying was absolutely can be justified. But what if its not an 'A' but a widespread pandemic that affect the whole country, continent, or even the whole wide world???
We all probably heard about the infamous flu pandemics such as the Avian Flu and the Swine Flu outbreak and the impact that send many countries into a mass hysteria. But before we get into details about it, lets take a crash course of Flu Pandemic 101 first:
FLU PANDEMIC 101
- The flu strain that cause a pandemic come from an ordinary flu virus that mutated rapidly into a new variant of virus. The mutation itself can not be stopped and inevitable. This newly mutated virus will easily affects humans because we do not have the antibody to fight with it yet.
- 30% of fluologists and epidemiologists believe that in the next three years there will be a major flu pandemic. And 90% of them is positive that it will happen in our children lifetime
- Larry Brilliant (the man who successfully eradicated the only disease in the world, which is Small Pox) stated that, If a flu pandemic reaches stage 4 (human to human transmission) there will be chaos in the world. There will be no airplanes flight, no market activity, no schools, and no works. This kind of disaster will cause the world TRILLIONS of dollars
Scary isn't it?
The world today have been busy with diseases like malaria or tuberculosis, but let's take a step ahead and deal with something that HAS NOT EXISTED YED, something that WILL HAPPEN IN THE FUTURE in our children lifetime if we does not act now.
Sir Ken Robinson in his famous TED Talks in 2006 once said that we are the leaders of tomorrow. But how can we be if every education, no matter what form it is (formal, informal, interactive, etc), focused on the problems that we are facing today. That is just impossible.
So, when we first gathered for our team discussion we realized that we want to build a solution that not only solve today's toughest problem, but also sustainable for the future itself. And Project Mosaic was born…
